Temperature does rise as one moves closer to the equator from either the northern or southern latitudes. This is more clearly seen in the northern latitudes where there are many more cities in latitudes above 40 degrees north.
The temperatures are roughly the same on either side of the equator (+/- 40 degrees). However, when latitude exceeds +/-40 degrees, the average temperature in the southern latitudes is greater than the northern latitudes. This is clearly seen when plotting the mean temperature across latitude ranges (click on plot at left) and is likely the affect of the earth's tilt in mid-November.
